Summary of clip: Ira (David Duchovny) and Harry (Orlando Jones) are going into the cavern created by the meteor. They use their powers of observation to explore the meteor imbedded into the ground. As they poke at the rock, it begins to ooze a bluish fluid and they say “This is peculiar; Oooh, a rock that bleeds.” This clip is particularly relevant because it does a splendid job of showcasing the “wonder” and “curiosity” that is a vital part of scientists’ work.

Connection of flickclip to the concept: This clip is an excellent visual reminder of the powers of observation and also helps acquaint students to the nature of science, the scientific method, and the habits of mind of scientists.

1. Suggested questions for students when viewing the clip:

a. If you were with Ira and Harry, what questions would you ask about what you were observing? What would you be inherently curious about? What sorts of investigations might you propose based on these observations?

b. Ira is a biologist and Harry is a geologist. What other kinds of scientists might be interested in studying this meteor and its blue fluid? Why would our understanding of this situation be more thorough if more scientists were involved?

c. Can you recall a time that you uncovered something in nature that piqued your interest? What did you do?
