Connection of flickclip to the concept: This clip is a very visual way to introduce students to the dangers of acid. Students can watch this clip and decide if the situation presented in the clip is realistic or not.

Suggestions to teachers:

1. Suggested questions for students when viewing the clip:

a. Dr. Dalton tells Rachel that volcanic activity has turned the lake into acid. What kind of acid must this be?

b. How many liters of water do you think might be in the lake? How much sulfur trioxide would be needed to turn the lake into such a strong acid?

c. If the lake were really acid and could dissolve the metal boat in less than five minutes, would you expect to see dead fish floating in the lake?

d. If the lake is acidic enough to “eat” the boat, what do you think the molarity is? What do you think the pH of the lake could be?

2. This clip shows acid in a negative manner, but acids also have many benefits as well. Have students investigate the importance of sulfuric acid in the manufacturing of goods such as fertilizers, detergents, paint dyes, plastics, iron, pharmaceuticals, etc.

3. Students can research the role of sulfuric acid in acid rain and the impact it has on the environment.
