Welcome to Resources for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

This webpage will serve to give you a brief overview and explanation of the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as provide you with explemplary lesson ideas that model the goals of the Standards. The overview can be found below and lesson ideas are organized by content area in the left-hand column. So let's get started!

What are the Next Generation Science Standards?

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are the latest set of scientific ideas, practices, and knowledge that students should know by the time they graduate high school. It is in effect as of the fall of 2013. The NGSS is based largely off of the National Research Council's Framework for K-12 Science Education (2011).

What is new?

A lot has changed with these new standards. These changes include:

  • Conceptual Shifts
  • A new presentation of the standards
  • Three distinct dimensions of the Framework

    Those dimensions are

  • Science and Engineering Practices
  • Crosscutting Concepts, and
  • Disciplinary Core Ideas (See Dimension 3)

     

    The key thing to keep in mind with the NGSS is that the 3 dimensions are not to be taught seperately, but rather should be folded into almost every lesson you teach. These are important aspects that are found throughout science, so they should be taught that way.

    Science and Engineering Practices

    The goal of the Science and Engineering Practices is that "In the future, science assessments will not assess students’ understanding of core ideas separately from their abilities to use the practices of science and engineering. They will be assessed together, showing students not only “know” science concepts; but also, students can use their understanding to investigate the natural world through the practices of science inquiry, or solve meaningful problems through the practices of engineering design."

    The Practices are things that students should be able to understand that are found in all scientific investigations and engineering problems.

    Crosscutting Concepts

    The Crosscutting Concepts are connections that are found in all disciplines of science. These Concepts help to bridge the distinct content areas and relate ideas in one classroom to what students are learning in another.

    Disciplinary Core Ideas

    The Disciplinary Core Ideas are the content specific goals for each grade bracket. These are end goals and knowledge that students should have. The Ideas are not checklist but are provided to give a comprehensive understanding of what students are expected to know.
